Dog walking in the UK goes back some 7,500 years as confirmed by archaeologists and these ancient 'walkies' covered hundreds of miles.
A tooth belonging to a domesticated dog thought to similar to German Shepherd has been found in the grounds close to Stonehenge, analysis suggests that the dog was originally from the Vale of York. This was some 2000 years before the stonehenge stones were erected.
There is some debate as to when dog walking as a business really got established, certainly from the 2000 onwards it started to resemble the industry now. There are likely tens of thousands of dog walking business in the UK and this number is still growing. .
It is probably the boom in jobs and more members of the family going to work that has been the driver behind this, also more people have activites before and after work. Whatever the reason this industry has become very big in a relatively short space of time. It is difficult to assess the actual size as some business have not registered as such.
